Women's US Open: Britain's Johanna Konta knocked out in the US Open first-round with a shock defeat against undeeded Serbian Aleksandra Krunic
Konta, seeded seventh, was amongst the favourites for the title and one of eight women who could have ended the tournament as world number one. A first serve percentage of just 45% allowed Krunic to attack off the return, and the world number 78 claimed a 4-6 6-3 6-4 victory.
England v West Indies at Headingly: Moeen Ali’s fine counter-attacking innings laid the foundation for England to push for a final-day victory in the second Test Match
England, who lead the three-match series 1-0, trailed by 169 runs after the first innings and now need 10 wickets on the final day to win. Moeen Ali scored 84 runs in 93 balls to help his side declare on 490-8, a lead of 321. Joe Root (72), Dawid Malan (61), Ben Stokes (58) and Chris Woakes (61 not out) also helped England take control.
Women’s Rugby World Cup: The Red Roses defeated by New Zealand in Belfast
England’s reign as World Champions was ended by a brilliant performance from New Zealand as the Black Ferns claimed their fifth title. England led 17-10 at half time but a dominant performance in the second half meant the All Blacks secured the win 41-32. England coach Simon Middleton said after the game that “it is a disappointment. We came here to win. We just could not get possession”.
