In this “week of sport” we’ve rounded up the highlights from the past seven days, recapping action from The Solheim Cup, the day-night test at Edgbaston, Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur and Mo Farah's latest win.
The USA retain the Solheim Cup
The Solheim Cup is a bi-annual women’s golf tournament between a USA team and a European team; named after the tournament's creator Norwegian-American golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim. 2017 saw the USA retain the Solheim Cup with a 16½ -11½ win over Europe, held at Des Moines, Iowa. The USA team went into Sunday’s matches with a 10 ½ - 5 ½ lead over Europe to hold on to their lead and win the Cup for another year running – this win secured the fifth win out of the last seven competitions for the United States and 10 out 15 since the Solheim Cup began in 1990.
England beat West Indies to take the lead in the series
England took 19 wickets on the third day of the day-night test match atEdgbaston, to beat West Indies by an innings and 209 runs. This means that England have taken the lead in the Investec Test Series ahead of the second Test beginning on Friday at Headingly.
Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium
This Sunday saw Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Spurs' home ground, Wembley Stadium. Antonio Conte’s side took the lead with a goal from Marcos Alonso after 24 minutes. Spurs responded but were unlucky when Harry Kane hit the post, however Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi headed Christian Eriksen’s free-kick into his own net to equalise the scores with eight minutes left. However Chelsea came back in the 88th minute when Alonso scored his second goal to give Chelsea the win. This is Spurs' seventh loss out of the past 10 games at their temporary home while awaiting completion of a new stadium at White Hart Lane.
Mo Farah wins the his final track race on home soil
Mo Farah has won his final race in Britain at the Birmingham Diamond League meeting. The British athlete sprinted clear to win the 3,000m at his final track meeting in the UK; finishing with a time of seven minutes and 38.64 seconds. Farah will race for the final time on the race-track at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday 24 August and will finish his season at the Great North Ru; seeing him switch to road racing in 2018.
