Johanna Konta made history yesterday (July 11) by becoming the first British woman to reach a Wimbledon singles semi-final since Virginia Wade in 1978, after overcoming Simona Halep in a grippingly close match.
Romanian second seed Halep would have rose to world number one had the quarter-final gone her way.
Virginia Wade, who triumphed at Wimbledon in 1977, has tipped 26-year old Konta to go all the way and reset the 39-year wait for a female British Wimbledon champion.
Speaking to BBC Sport, the three-time Grand Slam singles champ had plenty of kind words for both players, but believes Konta’s “tougher mind” and fiercer aggression ultimately made the difference.
US six-time Wimbledon singles champion Billie Jean King also praised how Konta handled herself both during and after the match, saying: “[Konta] never takes anything for granted.
“She knows that every time she goes on court, it's a blessing. Great Britain should be so proud of her and she should be proud of herself."
Konta’s comments after the quarter-final suggested that she may finally be accepting that 2017 could be her year at Wimbledon.
“Ever since I was nine years old, I've believed in my own ability and dreamed big,” she told the BBC.
“I don't give myself too much time to dream and more focus on the work. I just stuck to my true self.”
Venus Williams awaits Konta - who was born to Hungarian parents in Sydney before resettling in East Sussex, aged 14 - in the semi-final, due to take place on Friday.

Elsewhere at Wimbledon yesterday, Novak Djokovic overcame France’s Adrian Mannarino in straight sets to book a place in the quarter-finals, where he will face Czech 11th seed Tomas Berdych.
However, it wasn’t entirely plain sailing, with the Serb requiring treatment on his right shoulder during the match.
In mixed doubles, top seeds Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis progressed to the quarter-final after seeing off Czech pair Roman Jebavy and Lucie Hradecka in 71 minutes, even with rain forcing a pause in the action, twice.
