Federer and Djokovic through as Andy Murray prepares for next test

July 5, 2017

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer both had easy passages through their first round matches on the second day of Wimbledon 2017 after opponents retired, but day three could be full of drama as Andy Murray and Johanna Konta return to action.

Djokovic took the first set against Martin Klizan 6-2 and was 2-0 up in the second before his limping opponent retired, with  déjà vu to follow as Alexandr Dolgopolov lost the first set against Federer before he withdrew three games into the second.

The crowd was disappointed at the truncated nature of the matches, but they did get to witness the seven-time winner in top serving form, with a stream of aces. Federer's win was his 85th at the Championships, Wimbledon - a new record for a men's player.

Although some players have been criticised for taking part with injuries, Andy Murray and Johanna Konta came into the tournament with fitness concerns of their own, and both came through their first tests.

The action today (July 5th) will see Murray take on the entertaining Dustin Brown, whose flamboyant style saw off Rafael Nadal two years ago. The reigning champion should have too much in his locker to lose to the Jamaican, but the match will be a great one to watch. Brown may not ever play in the ATP World Tour Finals, but he has already found his place in Wimbledon history.

Konta faces a tougher task to reach the third round of the ladies' draw as she faces 21-year-old Croatian Donna Vekic, who surprisingly beat the world number seven in the Nottingham Open final two weeks ago. Vekic may be a Grand Slam winner in the future, but Konta will feel now could be her time.

Women's world number one Angelique Kerber came through yesterday, commencing yesterday's Centre Court action with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Irina Falconi. However, the German was below her best against the world number 247. It will be fascinating to see if she can hit the kind of form that took her to the final last year.
