Rafael Nadal wins record tenth French Open

June 12, 2017

Rafael Nadal produced another staggering performance to secure the tenth French Open of his career, the first time in the Open Era that anyone has got into double figures for the number of victories in a single Grand Slam.

The Spaniard went through the entire tournament without dropping a set, a record Stan Wawrinka could do nothing to alter in the final as he was blown away 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. It was Wawrinka's fourth appearance in a Grand Slam final and his first defeat.

The Swiss star had reached the final with an epic five-set win over Andy Murray that had pivoted on a crucial fourth-set tie-break. In the end, however, even the world number one's brilliant defensive skills were unable to stem the barrage of blistering forehand winners from the Wawrinka racket.

In the final, however, the sheer depth of Nadal's own hitting made it far harder for the world number three to find his range, while the famous whipped freehand of the Mallorcan has been complemented by an increasingly potent backhand. Like Dominic Thiem in the other semi-final, Wawrinka had no answer.

The victory means Nadal now overtakes Pete Sampras with 15 Grand Slams, just three behind Roger Federer. At 31, a year younger than US Open champion Wawrinka and four years younger than Federer, Nadal has a serious chance of equalling the 18 Federer now has.

Part of that equation could be winning a third Wimbledon title. Nadal has often struggled to turn his peerless form on clay into success on the faster surface of the All England Club, but he has still won the tournament twice - in 2008 and 2010 - as well as being runner-up in 2006, 2007 and 2011. If ever there was a time for him to roll back the years and challenge again, it is now. Indeed, the two previous occasions when Nadal won the French Open without dropping a set were his Wimbledon-winning years.

For all these reasons, fans booking corporate hospitality for the Championships, Wimbledon are in for a huge treat.

Before that, however, fans can see Wawrinka and Murray in the Aegon Championships, where both have huge incentives to do well. Murray won both his Wimbledon titles after victories at the Queen's Club and Wawrinka will be keen to secure his first grass court title ahead of Wimbledon. Indeed, the Swiss star will complete the set of Grand Slams if he can win in SW19, joining the same select band that Nadal, Federer and Novak Djokovic are part of.

The Queen's Club will also be welcoming several other top stars, including former US Open champions Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic, last year's Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic, veteran Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and rising star Nick Kyrgios.

Several wild cards have also been announced, with British fans at the expanded arena getting the chance to see Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans in action.

It all means that as the grass season gets underway, fans will have some great action in store at both tournaments in London.
