Derby Dreams alive and kicking as Epsom looms

May 31, 2017

The Epsom Investec Derby Festival, takes place on 3rd June and brings with it the hopes and dreams of stardom for anyone involved in the showpiece event. The Derby itself, the greatest flat race in the world, will take place on Saturday afternoon. Due off at 4:30 pm, a maximum field of 20 could go to post for the 2017 renewal.

Will you be there to savour the sights and sounds of Epsom? Whether you’re a casual racegoer, or are looking for official horse racing hospitality packages, the magic of Derby weekend is an experience to savour – with hospitality packages available right now.

The undulations and cambers of the track, the sweeping turn around Tattenham Corner, and the famous long straight, all combine to make the Derby a truly unique test for the thoroughbred; one that has been won by household names such as Nijinsky, Shergar, Nashwan and Sea The Stars.

Horses must overcome a buoyant crowd, funfairs, live music and an electric atmosphere to rule the Downs – with all of those elements providing the perfect backdrop for a magical day out.

Trying to work out who will join the illustrious roll of honour in 2017 is no mean feat, with the betting wide open at 4-1, at the time of writing.

Cliffs Of Moher, who heads the market, looks to be the number one choice for all-conquering trainer Aidan O’Brien. The improving Dee Stakes winner will surely only shorten if Ryan Moore – a two-time Derby victor – is pencilled in for the ride.

Cracksman is also battling for the top spot and represents identical connections to the 2015 hero, Golden Horn. While short on experience, with just two starts to his name, he has won over this unique course which can only be a positive. Frankie Dettori’s mount would be a popular winner, and would provide the famous jockey with a third win in the great race.

Next in the betting comes Eminent, who would provide the great Frankel with a first European classic winner from his opening crop of three year-olds. Sixth in the 2000 Guineas, Martyn Meade’s charge has some of the best form on offer, but will he stay the mile and a half trip?

A strong case could be made for several others, including Capri, another O’Brien entry, who will enjoy the recent easing of the ground after rain last weekend. Fortunately, the weather forecast is set fair and the Investec Epsom Derby Festival should be run in perfect conditions.

It all kicks off on Ladies’ Day, also known as Oaks Day, on Friday 2 June, when runners will go to post for the Investec Woodcote Stakes at 2:00 pm. But the fun and games will already have started by then, with gates set to open at 11:00 am.
