Best Solution wins Epsom Derby trial

May 16, 2017

The Epsom Derby Festival is one of the highlights of the racing year, and with the event taking place next month those booking corporate hospitality for the showpiece occasion will be among the thousands of racegoers studying the form.

Best Solution has emerged as one of the main contenders for the race after winning the Epsom Derby Trial at Lingfield.

The Godolphin-owned horse, ridden by Pat Cosgrave, secured an impressive victory in the race, with Glencadam Glory second and Tartini third.

Cosgrave said: "We went a good gallop and didn't mess about. I couldn't fault him. I thought it was a good performance with a penalty."

The result came as something of a surprise, as the 7-1 horse triumphed in a race favourite Sir John Lavery could only finish sixth in. Jockey Aidan O'Brien came into the race off the back of three derby trial winners, but this time the horse was slow getting away and never got back into contention.

BBC racing commentator Cornelius Lysaght said the result at Lingfield left the Epsom picture wide open, with no clear favourite emerging. He remarked: "Thank goodness we've still got a potentially most informative Dante Stakes to come as the big-race picture seems to me 8/10 in terms of confused."

Lysaght went on to suggest the Dante could be a pre-Derby race to watch, should Frankie Dettori get the best out of Cracksman.

Of course, trying to work out who will win the big race is just part of the fun of the Epsom Derby Festival. While Saturday June 3rd brings the latest running of the greatest flat race in the world, Friday will be ladies' day, a wonderful occasion for everyone to dress in their finest and enjoy the most convivial of atmospheres.

Nor should it be forgotten that the Derby is one of many great races over the weekend. Ladies' day brings the Investec Coronation Cup, the Investec Oaks and the Investec Surrey Stakes, while Derby day itself also includes the Princess Elizabeth Stakes and the Investec Diomed Stakes.
