The first day of the Investec Derby Festival takes place on 3 June 2017 and you’re probably just as excited as we are. But how’s your flat racing knowledge? Do you know which jockey’s to look out for? If you’re knowledge is a little thin on the ground then don’t worry, we’ve put together some handy facts on last year’s top five jockeys.
Every year flat racing jockey’s compete to become the Champion Jockey; the person who has ridden the most winning horses for that season.The 2017 season will be determined by the number of winners of both Flat and All Weather races taking place between 6 May and 14 October. There are currently 450 professional jockeys licensed in Great Britain as well as 300 amateur riders. Prize money for the Championship’s winning jockey was introduced in 2015 and stands at £25,000. The first record was published in 1846 and sponsorship was introduced in 2009; the current Championship is sponsored by Stobart Group.
