Twickenham-bound NFL teams make big-name draft picks

May 2, 2017

With the new NFL season approaching and a chance to enjoy corporate hospitality while watching four sides play at Twickenham in October, the draft has been more exciting than ever.

Having finished bottom last year, Cleveland Browns were the side given first pick, and chose the brilliant Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett. The 21-year-old will hope to make a big impact on a side that will be facing Minnesota Vikings on October 29th.

Garrett took to Twitter with a picture of himself as a toddler with a clenched fist of triumph, something fans may see the 2017 version producing at Twickenham if his side can beat the Vikings. NFL.com columnist Michael Silver described Garrett as "freakishly talented".

The other Browns selections were quarterback Deshone Kizer from Notre Dame University, Miami tight end David Njoku and Florida's defensive tackle Caleb Brantley. Better defence is a key priority for a team that endured a record of 1-15 last season.

Signing Garrett had been one of the main aims of newly hired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who was part of a delegation from the Browns that had met with Garrett last month. They put him through a series of drills and were impressed with both his attitude and his skills. Williams observed: "He came off the edge like I've maybe seen two people in my life - Bruce Smith and Jevon Kearse - and sacked the quarterback. It was amazing."

Other draft picks who fans can see at Twickenham include Haason Reddick for the Arizona Cardinals, who face Los Angeles Rams on October 22nd, while the earlier games at Wembley will see newly-drafted players like running back Leonard Fournette of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey, Miami Dolphins linebacker Charles Harris, and the New Orleans Saints pair of cornerback Marshon Lattimore and tackler Ryan Ramczyk.

British fans may be delighted to see two players born in the UK getting drafted into the NFL. London-born Jermaine Eluemunor was selected by the Baltimore Ravens, and could be playing at Wembley when they face Jacksonville Jaguars in September. Obi Melifonwu, who hails from Manchester, was a second round pick for Oakland Raiders.
