Juan Martin del Potro confirmed for Aegon championships

April 13, 2017

Fans booking corporate hospitality for the Aegon Championships at the Queen's Club in June can enjoy seeing another superstar in action, after Juan Martin del Potro confirmed his appearance.

The Argentinean, who was the silver medallist at the Rio Olympics last year when he lost a tough final to Andy Murray, has made a big comeback in the last few months after undergoing multiple wrist operations for injuries that some thought would end his career.

Instead, he has come back to show the world he is still one of the best players around, with his trademark booming forehand taking him close to glory and helping Argentina win the Davis Cup. Indeed, it was his victory against Andy Murray that proved crucial in the defeat of Great Britain in the semi-final.

Speaking about his appearance at the Queen's Club, the 2009 US Open winner said: "I am so happy to be coming back to the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club. It is a great event, to me a very traditional moment of the calendar, such a nice place to play in front of fans that have always been nice to me."

Tournament director Stephen Farrow said of del Potro: "He showed in the Olympics and the Davis Cup last year that he can still take on and beat the very best players in the world."

As well as defeating Murray in the Davis Cup, del Potro also knocked Novak Djokovic out of the Olympics and beat Stan Wawrinka in the US Open.

Murray and Wawrinka will be among the other leading players confirmed for this year's event, along with 14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal.

Other confirmed participants in the singles include last year's finalist Milos Raonic, 2014 winner Grigor Dimitrov and rising Aussie star Nick Kyrgios, who has already beaten Djokovic twice this year. Jamie Murray will feature in the doubles.

Del Potro will hope to be the first man from Argentina to win at the Queen's Club, although compatriot David Nalbandian did reach the 2012 final.
