Ian Bell chosen as ICC Champions Trophy ambassador

April 13, 2017

Warwickshire captain Ian Bell has been chosen as one of the ambassadors for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy tournament in England this summer.

Fans can enjoy corporate hospitality while watching matches in the tournament at Edgbaston in June, with the venue in Birmingham being one of three to host matches, along with the Kia Oval and the Cardiff Wales Stadium.

Bell is one of eight former international stars selected, one for each of the teams in the event. The others are Pakistan's legendary big-hitting all-rounder Shahid Afridi, former Bangladesh batsman Habibul Bashar, Mike Hussey of Australia, former South African captain Graeme Smith - who made his highest Test score of 277 at Edgbaston in 2003, plus Indian off-spinner Harbajhan Singh and two former Warwickshire overseas players, Sri Lankan master batsman Kumar Sangakkara and New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond.

Although he is now retired from the international scene, Sangakkara is still playing county cricket for Surrey and featured against Warwickshire last week.

Between them, the ambassadors have made 1,774 one-day international appearances, scored 51,906 runs with 48 centuries, as well as taking 838 wickets.

The list was named to mark 50 days before the opening match of the tournament, when England take on Bangladesh at the Kia Oval on June 1st. The ambassadors will be involved in promoting the tournament, coaching and inspiring children around the country and subsequently providing commentary and reports on the matches themselves when the tournament gets underway.

Commenting on his selection, Bell said: "This is going to be a fantastic summer of cricket over here in the UK and I'm honoured to be involved.

"Judging by the players due to be on show, the Champions Trophy is no doubt going to be a stunning competition and I'm certain the amazing fans over here will get behind it like they always do with sport in this country."

Edgbaston hosts five games in the tournament, including England against Australia on June 10th and a semi-final on June 15th.
