Johanna Konta vanquishes Venus to reach Miami final

March 31, 2017

Johanna Konta has made history by becoming the first British woman ever to reach the Miami Open final after beating Venus Williams in the semi-final.

In one of the biggest WTA tournaments outside the Grand Slams, the British number one defeated the Australian open finalist 6-4, 7-5 in their semi-final meeting and will now face world number 14 Caroline Wozniacki in the final after the Dane defeated second seed Karolina Pliskova 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in their semi-final.

Konta began her match superbly against the five-time Wimbledon champion by racing into a 3-0 lead with two breaks. Williams was able to retrieve one of them, but not both.

In the second, the American had to save five break points in her opening service game before earning a break of her own to go 3-1 up.

However, Konta's superb returning saw her break three more times to make history.

It means that, even if she loses the final, Konta will see her world ranking rise to number seven and British fans booking corporate hospitality for the Championships, Wimbledon will have more reasons to be confident that she can challenge for the title. With Andy Murray seeking to defend the men's title, this could yet be the first time both singles trophies have been won by Britons in the same year since Fred Perry and Dorothy Round did it in 1934.

While British success at Miami is close, in the men's draw, another meeting between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal remains possible, with both men into the semi-finals.

Federer continued his brilliant start to 2017 by reaching the last four with a dramatic 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) win over Tomas Berdych, one of the players he beat in his Australian Open run. He will face the in-form Aussie Nick Kyrgios, who defeated Alexander Zverev and will be looking for another big scalp after beating Novak Djokovic twice this year.

Nadal beat Jack Sock in his quarter-final and will face Fabio Fognini, who became the first unseeded player to reach the last four in a decade by defeating Kei Nishikori.
