Eddie Jones names England squad for Old Mutual series

September 30, 2016

England coach Eddie Jones has named his squad for the Old Mutual Autumn Internationals.

The Australian has picked a 45-man Elite Player Squad, and a 37-man group who will assemble in Brighton for a three-day training camp from October 2nd-4th.

Fans booking corporate hospitality for the opening match of the series against South Africa at Twickenham on November 12th will be interested by the naming of seven uncapped players in the 37, although some have been in training squads before.

These include Sale second row Josh Beaumont. A trio of uncapped back-row forwards have been named - Sam Jones and Nathan Hughes of Wasps, plus Mike Williams and Nathan Hughes of Leicester Tigers - while also in the group are forward Ben Morgan of Gloucester and two centres, Ben Te'o of Worcester Warriors and Joe Marchant from Harlequins.

Discussing his selections, Jones said: "The Old Mutual Wealth Series will be a big challenge and the players will need to step up to the mark.

"With a number of players missing through injury, it’s a good opportunity for others to put their hands up and show us what they’re made of."

Jones added that ideally, he wants the England squad to have three talented players in every position by the time the 2019 Rugby World Cup comes around.

In the meantime, however, the focus will be on continuing the coach's winning start, which so far has included the Six Nations Grand Slam, a summer win over Wales and a 3-0 whitewash of Australia on tour.

However, the autumn is bringing more challenges, with Jones observing: "England have not beaten South Africa since 2006 and this needs to change."

That barren run against the Springboks included the 2007 World Cup final, but having tasted a sensational victory against the South Africans in last year's World Cup with Japan, the coach will be expecting England to deliver.

Further fixtures at Twickenham will see England taking on Fiji on November 19th, Argentina on November 26th and Australia on December 3rd.
