Kyle Edmund thrashes Richard Gasquet in US Open

August 30, 2016

Kyle Edmund has recorded the best win of his career to date by thrashing 13th seed Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the US Open.

The world number 84 stunned the Frenchman at Flushing Meadows in his first match in the main draw, providing further evidence that he may be emerging as a star of the future.

At the age of just 21, Edmund was a hero for Great Britain in the Davis Cup tie against Serbia last month as he won both his singles rubbers. However, his demolition of one of the seeds in a Grand Slam provides more reason to believe the prediction of Davis Cup captain Leon Smith that he could one day be a top ten player.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Smith said: "The one thing Kyle's improved hugely, even since the Olympics, is how he's managed his forehand. Often he's tried to hit it harder and harder, but today he hit it with different heights, spins and then injected pace."

Gasquet had plenty of praise for his opponent, saying: "I've seen him many times play so I knew how good he is. He deserved it. He played well, will be very good in the future."

Edmund will play world number 201 Ernedo Escopedo in the second round.

Fans booking corporate hospitality for The Championships, Wimbledon in 2017 may be particularly excited by the thought of another possible British superstar on show to join Andy Murray and Johanna Konta.

Konta, who is seeded 13th in New York, began her bid to reach a maiden Grand Slam final by making short work of American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, defeating her 6-3, 6-3 with an excellent performance on the new Grandstand Court.

Murray remains the Briton most likely to come home with silverware, however, and he will start his campaign against Lukas Rosol later today (August 29th).

Top seed Novak Djokovic won through his opening match against 2013 Wimbledon semi-finalist Jerzy Janovicz 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, despite needing the trainer at one stage after hurting his right arm.
