Andy Murray survives Olympian scare

August 12, 2016

Andy Murray survived a huge scare in the Olympic tennis tournament against world number 40 Fabio Fognini to progress to the last eight of the competition.

The 2012 gold medallist appeared set for another simple straight-sets victory as the Italian produced a limp performance in the first set to lose it 6-1.

However, Murray was not at his best and he was stunned as Fognini suddenly started to produce his best form, with a series of fine ground strokes seeing him take a grip of the second set.

The champion was left floundering as Fognini took the second set 6-2 and then went 3-0 up with a break in the decider, winning eight successive games in the process.

However, as so often in his career, Murray was swift to fight back, holding for 1-3 and then breaking Fognini. From then on the Italian's confidence evaporated as Murray won a series of baseline rallies. He broke twice more to take the decider 6-3 and march on into the quarter-finals, where he will face American Steve Johnson.

Fans booking corporate hospitality for the ATP World Tour Finals may be doing more than just following Murray's progress, as Rafael Nadal has continued his run with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Gilles Simon.

Indeed, the prospect of the 2008 winner facing the reigning champion will be a mouth-watering one both for fans in Rio and those who will be in London in November, as a return to form for Nadal after his wrist injury could herald an exciting end of year for the Spaniard.

Murray followed his singles win by making progress in the mixed doubles with Heather Watson, as they beat Spaniards Carla Suarez Navarro and David Ferrer 6-3, 6-3.

However, it was a day to forget for Johanna Konta as her singles challenge ended with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat to second seed Angelique Kerber. She and Jamie Murray were then knocked out of the mixed doubles 6-4, 6-3 by Americans Jack Sock and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

However, Konta has had some impressive moments in the tournament, not least when she beat Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.
